Feeling thrifty?

Do these clothes above look fairly new? If so, don’t let the eye decieve you. The shorts are 80’s Levi’s, the crop top is estimated from 2002 or 2003, and my best guess guess is the Charlotte Russe shoes are from probably 2004 or 2005. From this information you can probably assume where I found all of these, a thrift store! Stores as such and community donation centers are the epitome of the idiom, “one man’s trash is another man’s treasure.”

Sometimes walking into a thrift store is analogous as walking into a time machine. When I first ventured to the shirt rack I immediately had flashbacks of searching through clothing racks at the mall in the 90’s and early 2000s. The smells, the sights and sometimes god-awful styles bring back the memories. Yet like they say, history repeats itself. Some trends, such as high waisted shorts, repeat and some trends, such as fanny packs, are gone. (Hopefully for good.) Fashion trends usually repeat themselves every 20 years, and when they come back, they come back adjusted to the time period. For example, obviously bright colors and neons were popular in the 80s, such as they were a few years ago. This time, instead of showing up in leg warmers, they were seen bangles and tee shirts.

Here are some tips for shopping in thrift stores.

1: Just because it was cute ten years ago, doesn’t necessarily mean it is still now. If something seems iffy, think of how it can adapt to now with certain accessories or even adjusting it yourself such as adjusting the neckline to make it off the shoulder.

2: Sizes change with the times. A 5/6 in the 80’s is just as big as  7/8 or 9/10 now. Make sure to try on most of what you buy.

3: I would stay away from undergarments and bathing suits.. that’s mostly self-explanatory.

My favorite part about thrift stores is the price!

The Charlotte Russe brown low-heeled strapped sandals were about $6.

The Levi-Strauss 80’s high waisted light wash denim shorts were $5.

The No Boundaries floral crop top was only $3!

Popular thrift stores are Savers, Second Time Around, and your local goodwill. Happy hunting!
